Welcome to Queens to Cleveland, where estate planning attorneys Andrew Jaloza and Matt Deliberato break down estate planning and elder law in a way that’s practical, relatable, and—believe it or not—entertaining. As two attorneys from different parts of the country—Andrew in Queens, New York, and Matt in Cleveland, Ohio—we often compare and contrast the laws in our states, but the reality is that estate planning concerns are universal.
In our very first episode, we talked about why we do what we do, how we got here, and why estate planning is one of the most important things you can do for your future and your family.
How We Got Here: Different Paths, Same Mission
Matt’s journey into estate planning is one of a kind—he’s a fourth-generation funeral director. After working in the family business, he saw firsthand how families were more worried about legal and financial issues than grieving their loved ones. That realization led him to law school, where he made it his mission to help families plan ahead so they wouldn’t have to deal with unnecessary stress during life’s most difficult moments.
Andrew, on the other hand, started his legal career in business law and real estate before transitioning to estate planning and elder law. His passion grew when he helped his own grandparents navigate Medicaid planning and asset protection. He saw how many families struggled with the system and knew he could make a difference.
Estate Planning Is More Than Just Documents
One of the biggest misconceptions about estate planning is that it’s just about drafting a will. In reality, estate planning covers everything from asset protection and trust administration to Medicaid qualification and probate. The goal isn’t just to put documents in place—it’s to give families peace of mind, knowing their hard-earned assets are protected and their wishes will be honored.
We both agree that one of the most rewarding parts of our job is seeing the relief on a client’s face when they realize they have a plan. Whether it’s a young family setting up guardianship for their kids, a business owner protecting their legacy, or a senior trying to navigate Medicaid without losing everything, estate planning is about security, protection, and ensuring your wishes are carried out.
